Three-Time Open-Heart Surgery Survivor • Patient Advocate • Speaker

Sterling Griggs

A lived patient perspective on congenital heart disease, resilience, advocacy, compassionate care, and hope in recovery.

My Story

I was born with a congenital heart defect known as aortic stenosis and insufficiency. Over the course of my life, I have undergone three open-heart surgeries, including valve replacements, aortic arch repair, and the repair of a rare aortopulmonary fistula. My most recent surgery was especially difficult and required a 40-day hospital stay followed by extensive rehabilitation. That experience changed me — not only physically, but emotionally, spiritually, and vocationally.

While my cardiac journey is uniquely mine, the lessons I have learned through congenital heart disease, multiple open-heart surgeries, prolonged hospitalizations, and difficult recoveries are deeply relevant to patients, families, and healthcare professionals alike.

Having lived on the patient side of complex healthcare, I understand the fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, and vulnerability that patients and families often carry. I also know the powerful difference compassionate communication, attentive care, and patient advocacy can make during the most critical moments of a person’s life.

My desire is to use my story to encourage cardiac patients, support families, and help healthcare professionals see the enduring impact of their care beyond the clinical setting.

Purpose

My goal is simple: to remind patients that they are not alone, to help families feel seen and supported, and to encourage healthcare teams by showing them how their skill, presence, and compassion can help carry someone through the hardest chapter of their life.
